Just off the coast of northern Venezuela lies Isla de Margarita, dubbed the "pearl of the Caribbean." Isla de Margarita is part of the three-island Nueva Esparta State of Venezuela, the two other islands are Coche and Cubagua. Isla de Margarita is important in Venezuelan history since it was the first free territory in Venezuela. Porlamar is the island's largest city.
